Ratios and proportions

1) There are two numbers which are 20% and 60% more than a third number. The ratio of the two numbers is?

1:3
Wrong
1:6
Wrong
2:3
Wrong
3:4
Correct
Show / Hide Solution
Let A and B be the two numbers. Let the third number be C=100. A and B are 20% and 60% more than C=100.

So A = 120 and B = 160
Ratio is 120:160 = 3:4

2) A certain amount of money is shared among A,B,C,D in the proportion 2:5:4:3. If C gets Rs. 1000 more than what D gets, then what is the total amount of money shared?

Rs. 5000
Wrong
Rs. 14000
Correct
Rs. 13000
Wrong
Rs. 16000
Wrong
Show / Hide Solution
From the data, C gets Rs. 1000 more than that of D. If D is getting Rs. 3000, then C has to get Rs. 4000. The proportions can be directly scaled to thousands as shown below:
A: Rs. 2000
B: Rs. 5000
C: Rs. 4000
D: Rs. 3000
Therefore the total amount of money shared is Rs. 14000

3) A and B have a total of 1824 pencils. 1/3 of what A has is equal to 5/21 of what B has. How many pencils does B have?

1064
Correct
750
Wrong
760
Wrong
1164
Wrong
Show / Hide Solution
1/3 of A = 5/21 of B
(1/3)A = (5/21)B
A/B = 5/21 * 3/1
A/B = 5/7
B should have 7/(5+7) of total pencils
B = (7/12)1824
B = 1064
